13A – Reading Reflection No. 1

13A – Reading Reflection No. 1

The reading that I chose to read was Elon Musk: Tesla, SpaceX, and the Quest for a Fantastic Future by Ashlee Vance.
1) You read about an entrepreneur:
What surprised me the most about Elon Musk and his biography is that his ultimate goal is to create something that will benefit mankind as a whole, and not necessarily just himself. I, specifically, admired Musk's mindset and tranquility when he believed in something and got started with it. Most business owners that believe they have a new start-up idea invest almost everything and stress, but Elon Musk took it one step forward to risk having days to come up with thousands or even getting rid of everything and sleeping on a friends couch because of how much he believed in himself and his ideas.  To be honest, there is nothing about Musk and what he's done that I don't admire. He faced adversity and risked everything for something that he believed in and he was doing it out of the good of everyone and not just himself. If there is something Elon Musk never did, he never made an excuse. He failed and failed but ultimately never gave up, allowing him to overcome adversity and doubters to find a way to prove that one day his vision will be a reality, and it is.
2) What competencies did you notice that the entrepreneur exhibited?
Elon musk succeed well with listening, creating and investing into an idea that not only he believed in, but also that his colleges, audience and research explained would help make daily life easier and would be invested in. This helped create one of Elon's most interpersonal skills in being calm and tranquil under the most stressful situations. By listening to what people most want, it encouraged Musk to be innovative and create new products and services that could ultimately change an industry if successful.
3) Identify at least one part of the reading that was confusing to you.
One part of the reading that was confusing to me was the Musk's introduction of the idea of a planetary species that would help sustain mankind. At first, I thought the plans and research are solely based on speculations and only an insane person would carry out, and succeed, with such a project. But then, Musk's plan came together to explain what how he's risk management for humanity to ultimately try to alleviate human dependency on oil.
4) If you were able to ask two questions to the entrepreneur, what would you ask? Why?
If I were able to ask two questions to Elon Musk, my first question would be very straightforward and simple: If you had the possibility to change three current things in the world, what would they be? This question is important to me in understanding Elon Musk's true mindset and how he thinks as a business creator. Also, who wouldn't want to hear what industries Elon Musk thinks have an opportunity for a new need? The second question I would ask Musk is if he had desire to make Tesla aquatic? This would be a good question considering it could possibly follow up my previous question and pertains to Musk's inventions, as he already innovated land transportation and is working on aerospace/space.
5) For fun: what do you think the entrepreneur's opinion was of hard work? Do you share that opinion?
I believe that Elon Musk's opinion of hard work was that although your working hard, it still takes time to see results and Musk always looked to seek an alternative method to limiting the time it takes to see results. What I mean by this is that Musk worked ridiculous amounts of hours  because he thought that no matter how hard he worked, he could do more work by sacrificing more of his time. I do agree and share that opinion with Musk because I believe that you can only do so much based on the time you have and even if your not working hard, your still being more productive with your time then others who are relaxing.

    Hi Cade!

I did my reading reflection on this book as well. I agree with everything in your post, specifically with how you describe his convictions in his ideas and the tenacity to keep pursuing them no matter what. I also have the same perception of him after reading the book. It seems like these are the most important traits for an entrepreneur. Great post!
